Name the Park Contest

Help Name the Park at 13th St. and Muhammad Ali Blvd!

As part of the Choice Neighborhoods Implementation grant, Louisville Metro Housing Authority and Metro Parks are creating a park at S. 13th Street and W. Muhammad Ali Boulevard to replace the former Old Walnut Street Park located at 9th Street and W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. Funding for the park is being provided through the federal American Rescue Plan Act, and a $250,000 grant from the Cincinnati Bengals, the NFL Foundation, and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Louisville.

The design – which was developed with extensive input from Beecher and Russell residents and stakeholders – has been unveiled, so it’s time to choose a name for the replacement park that celebrates Russell’s past, present, and future.

Eligible submissions should come from residents of West Louisville living in the 40203, 40210, 40211, and 40212, zip codes or current and former Beecher Terrace residents.

Please submit your ideas by April 30th, 2023.

If your suggestion is selected, you could win a $250 gift certificate.

If multiple people submit the selected name, a drawing will be held to determine the winner of the gift certificate.

Naming Guidelines

  • Potential names should meet one or more of the following criteria:
    • Neighborhood or geographical identification.
    • A natural or geological feature.
    • Historical or cultural significance.
    • A goal or vision for the future.
    • A historical figure or individual who has made a significant civic contribution to the city through public service or civic engagement.
  • Names that are similar to existing parks, properties or facilities will not be considered in order to avoid confusion.

Suggestions will be reviewed by the Beecher Terrace Recreational Amenities Leadership Group together with Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation and Louisville Metro Housing Authority staff to ensure they meet the above criteria.

Submitters will be encouraged to include a brief statement explaining why they think their suggested name is appropriate for the new park.

The Beecher Terrace Recreational Amenities Leadership Group will then choose their preferred entry.
